Multiscale modeling of bone tissue mechanobiology

چکیده

Mechanical environment has a crucial role in our organism at the different levels, ranging from cells to tissues and own organs. This regulatory is especially relevant for bones, given their importance as load-transmitting elements that allow movement of body well protection vital organs load impacts. Therefore bone, living tissue, continuously adapting its properties, shape repairing itself, being mechanical loads one main stimuli modulate this adaptive behavior. Here we review some key results bone mechanobiology computational models, describing effect changes associated induce response, implant design scaffold-driven regeneration.

In silico bone mechanobiology: modeling a multifaceted biological system

Mechanobiology, the study of the influence of mechanical loads on biological processes through signaling to cells, is fundamental to the inherent ability of bone tissue to adapt its structure in response to mechanical stimulation. The immense contribution of computational modeling to the nascent field of bone mechanobiology is indisputable, having aided in the interpretation of experimental fin...

Multiscale modeling of viscoelastic plant tissue

We present a multiscale method for the simulation of large viscoelastic deformations and show its applicability to biological tissue such as plant tissue. At the microscopic level we use a particle method to model the geometrical structure and basic properties of individual cells. The cell fluid, modeled as a viscoelastic fluid by means of Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) is enclosed in an...

Chapter 6. Biomechanics and Mechanobiology of Bone

The primary responsibility of the skeleton is to provide structural support for the body. In this role, the skeleton is the basis of posture, opposes muscular contraction conveying locomotion, withstands the daily challenges of load bearing, and protects internal organs. The structural success of the skeleton, achieved through the interdependent contributions of the skeleton’s morphology and me...

The mechanobiology of cancellous bone structural adaptation.

The distinguishing morphological feature of cancellous bone is its high level of porosity relative to cortical bone. This porosity leads to more free surfaces and thus to more of the cellular constituents that inhabit those surfaces. As a result, cancellous bone is often more metabolically active and responsive to stimuli than cortical bone. This extends to the relationship between cancellous b...

Multiscale Modelling of bioreactors for growing bone tissue

Failure to grow thick (3D) implantable bone tissue is partly due to the lack of tissue vascularisation resulting from a fall in nutrient supply to the cells as the distance between the cells and nutrient sources increases. Previous attempts that used porous scaffold without hollow fibre (HF) produced tissues of less than 0.5mm thickness which are of limited clinical use. Recent studies suggest ...
